Transrectal Biopsy Preparations

PLEASE REVIEW
Patients MUST arrive 20 minutes before their appointment time. Patients arriving late may be rescheduled.
Please be aware that this is a “Fragrance Free” facility.

PREPARATION
– Patient must have a recent Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test done
– Patient needs to be on oral antibiotics, prescribed by ATTENDING physician. Patient takes 1 dose a day before procedure, and one daily following procedure until finished. Generally, Cipro is the antibiotic of choice.
– No Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for 10 days, if on long term use
– No blood thinners (including aspirin), for 10 days prior to procedure (If there is a concern regarding this, ordering physician should discuss with radiologist)
– If there are modifications to the preparation after discussion with the radiologist, please notify Ultrasound Department
– No food restrictions
– Continue other medications as usual
– Fleet enema (purchased at drug store) self-administered at home 2 hours BEFORE appointment time

POST EXAM CARE
– Normal activities may be resumed after biopsy although no heavy lifting on day of procedure is recommended
– Resume blood thinners at the discretion of attending physician

DIRECTIONS
Park in the front (north) parking lot, located off Juliana Drive and enter the hospital through the Main Entrance.

– After registering, proceed to Waiting Area #4, room M894
