    PLEASE REVIEW

    PREPARATION
    – Do not take a calcium supplement or osteoporosis treatment the day of the appointment until after your exam
    – Continue other medications as usual
    – No restrictions on food or drink
    – Wear loose fitting clothing with no buttons or zippers and remove any abdominal jewellery (no underwire bras)
    – Bring a written list of current medications

    CONTRAINDICATIONS
    – Suspected pregnancy
    – Within 5 days of scheduled appointment, administration of radiopaque contrast (UGI, Barium Enema, CT with barium)
    – Within 3 days of scheduled appointment, administration of nuclear medicine radioactive isotope
    – Weight restriction of 350 pounds on BMD unit.

CT Preparation Instructions

  • CT Angiography Run-off and Pulmonary Angiography Preparations

    PREPARATION
    – No solid foods 4 hours before and up to appointment time
    – No restriction of clear fluids up to time of arrival. Clear fluids include: water, juices without pulp, Gatorade or Kool Aid or Jell-O (of any colour), decaffeinated tea & coffee (no milk or cream), clear strained broth
    – Continue your medications as usual
    – All body piercings should be removed before arriving and wear comfortable clothing with no metal

    DIABETIC DEVICES:
    Glucose sensors and insulin pumps can be damaged by X-rays, radiation and magnetic fields. Glucose sensors and insulin pumps must be removed immediately prior to your test. Insulin pumps may be restarted following the test. Glucose sensors cannot be reinserted – you must use a new sensor following the test. For any questions regarding your device, please contact the manufacturer of your device.
    – INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETIC ONLY – Take your normal dose of insulin with a small breakfast (cereal, toast, juice) the day of your appointment

    CONSENT AND IV CONTRAST
    – IV contrast is required, so patient must be capable of giving informed consent (If incapable, the substitute decision maker must accompany the patient)
    – Please bring reading glasses, if necessary, to complete medical history questionnaire
    – Bring a written list of current medications and allergies

    POST-EXAM CARE
    – Drink extra fluids, if able, each day for two days unless otherwise instructed by your doctor
    – Resume normal diet and activity

    – If there are modifications to the prep after discussion with the radiologist, please notify CT Department

  • Cervical/Thoracic/Lumbar Facet Preparations

    PLEASE REVIEW

    – Procedure-related medication charges will be billed to the patient.
    – Payment is due the same day at the cashier.
    – The facility is fragrance-free.
    – Ensure you have a translator if needed.

    PREPARATION
    – Fast for 2 hours before your appointment.
    – Diabetic patients will have blood sugar checked and may be rescheduled if elevated. Consult your primary care provider about diabetes management.
    – If you have an active infection or took antibiotics in the last 7 days, your appointment may be rescheduled. Notify the hospital 48 hours in advance if applicable.
    – Ensure you have a driver; otherwise, your appointment may be rescheduled.
    – Bring a list of all CURRENT medications.
    – At the time of your appointment please inform the nurse of any drug allergies, X-ray dye allergies, or history of fainting with injections.

    BLOOD THINNERS AND MEDICATION:
    – Lumbar Spine Facets: Continue blood thinners, including Aspirin.
    – Cervical/Thoracic Facets: Blood thinners may need to be paused. Consult your primary care provider for guidance. Aspirin may be paused 6 days prior, Clopidogrel 7 days, Apixaban 3 days. Do not stop blood thinners without physician approval. Patients may continue other medications.

    POST PROCEDURE:
    – Arrange for a driver post injection and avoid driving for 24 hours.
    – Wait 8 hours post injection to breastfeed.

Mammography Preparation Instructions

  • Mammogram with Contrast Preparations

    BLOODWORK
    Patients with kidney issues, take medication for diabetes, or on medications predisposing to nephrotoxicity must have creatinine levels tested prior to exam. Results must be within 3 months of their appointment.

    PROCEDURE
    Involves contrast injection in the patient’s arm.
    Consent for the injection will be completed in the Breast Department at the time of patient’s appointment.
    Patient must be able to sit upright without support for this procedure.

    DIABETIC PATIENTS
    It is recommended to remove any sensor, transmitter, receiver or insulin pump, from their body, prior to any medical imaging.
    Sensors (Libre/Dexcom/Veo) should be removed from body prior to imaging test and then replaced with a new sensor, after the test is completed.

    – If you wear a dermal patch (Nitro, pain med. or hormone), do not place on the chest region

  • MRI Abdomen Preparations

    PLEASE REVIEW

    PREPARATION
    – Patient must NOT eat or drink for 4 hours prior to their appointment

    – All body piercings and jewelry should be removed before arriving. Wear comfortable clothing with no metal.
    –If you have hearing aids, please wear them to the appointment. We will remove them before the scan.
    – It may be necessary for the patient to remove their continuous glucose monitor (CGM) prior to entering the MRI environment for the examination to proceed safely. Please contact the MRI Department with any questions.
    – Insulin pumps and certain CGM can be damaged by magnetic fields. Insulin pumps must be removed immediately prior to your test. Insulin pumps may be restarted following the test.     – No diuretics for 3 days prior
    – No IV contrast for 24 hours prior
    – Drink 3 glasses (8 ounces each) of water the morning of exam (patient can empty bladder)
