Energy Conservation and Management Plan

Woodstock Hospital consists of a 32,500 m2 hospital built in 2011 and a 2,500 m2 medical building built in 2012. The hospital has 178 beds, and provides primary care to 55,000 people and specialized care to 100,000 people in the community Services and programs offered in this facility include the following:

  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation services
  • Cardio-respiratory services
  • Pharmacy and laboratory services
  • A diagnostic Imaging (DI) department
  • Surgical services
  • Inpatient medical/surgical beds
  • Critical care and complex continuing care
  • A maternal/child/women’s health unit
  • Inpatient and outpatient acute mental health services
  • Emergency Services

As part of the construction process, the hospital achieved LEED® Silver Certification. The site achieved two points for water efficient landscaping design that results in no ongoing potable water usage for irrigation. The project did not pursue water efficiency credits, as there was concern about legionella risk associated with low flow faucets that use aerator technology.

  • Major uses of water in the facility includes the following:
  • Cooling tower (mid-April – mid-November only)
  • Domestic cold water (lavatories, water closets, showers)
  • Domestic hot water (lavatories, showers)
  • RO Water (Sterilization, RO for operating rooms, humidification [November-March only])
  • Hard water (hose bibbs on exterior of building, brine tank)

The facility’s water consumption for 2012 was 2.12 m3/m2, which is lower than the provincial average, according to the Ontario Hospital Association’s Green Hospital Scorecard. The following is a water trend for the past 2 years at the hospital:

Policy

Woodstock Hospital is committed to continually improving the environmental performance of its building and working toward being industry leaders in water conservation efforts. To further this goal, WH has set a target to reduce water consumption year over year on an ongoing basis. WH’s senior management and board of directors is committed to enforcing this policy.*(forward for approval)*

Plan

In order to achieve its goal of reducing energy consumption each year from the previous year, WH is looking at the following initiatives:

  • Develop a staff, patient and tenant education and awareness program related to water conservation
  • Ongoing review of water consumption data to identify areas for potential improvement
  • Meet regularly to review water data and discuss opportunities for savings
  • Fix leaks and sensors promptly to minimize impact to water usage.
  • Minimize outdoor irrigation through continued use of drought resistant plants

Conclusion

The plan outlined in this document will be applied to both the hospital and the medical professional building. It will be available to staff, tenants, and the public via the Woodstock Hospital website. WH is committed to providing high quality health care services that are delivered in a way that minimizes the use of water.
