Nuclear Medicine Instructions – Gastric Emptying Preparations

PLEASE REVIEW
Patients MUST arrive 20 minutes before their appointment time. Patients arriving late may be rescheduled. This exam may take up to 4 hours.

PREPARATION
– Nothing to eat or drink after midnight ( 8 hours before exam)
– Stop gastric motility drugs 1-2 days prior to exam.
– Please bring your current medications and a list of allergies
– Please inform technologist if patient has had gastric surgery, diabetes, thyroid disorder or is on narcotics
– During exam patient will be given a bottle of Ensure Plus to drink (if there are dietary restrictions, call the department ahead of the appointment date (519-421-4233 ext.2026)
– Pediatric patients are asked to bring foods/drinks that they prefer

DIABETIC DEVICES:
Glucose sensors and insulin pumps can be damaged by X-rays, radiation and magnetic fields. Glucose sensors and insulin pumps must be removed immediately prior to your test. Insulin pumps may be restarted following the test. Glucose sensors cannot be reinserted – you must use a new sensor following the test.
