Nuclear Medicine Instructions – Thyroid Scan Preparations

PLEASE REVIEW
Patients MUST arrive 20 minutes before their appointment time. Patients arriving late may be rescheduled.

PREPARATION       THIS IS A 2 DAY TEST
– Stop thyroid medication, Synthroid, Levothyroxine, Eltroxin, for 1 month
– No CT contrast media for 2 months prior
– Require Bloodwork (TSH) results on requisition.
– No multivitamins, high iodine foods, or seafood for 3 weeks prior
– No PTU, Tapazole, Methimazole for 3-5 days prior
– Please bring your current medications and a list of allergies
– Continue other medications as usual

DIABETIC DEVICES:
Glucose sensors and insulin pumps can be damaged by X-rays, radiation and magnetic fields. Glucose sensors and insulin pumps must be removed immediately prior to your test. Insulin pumps may be restarted following the test. Glucose sensors cannot be reinserted – you must use a new sensor following the test. For any questions regarding your device, please contact the manufacturer of your device.

CONSENT AND INJECTION
– An injection is required, so patient MUST be capable of giving informed consent (If incapable, the substitute decision maker must accompany the patient)
