X-RAY Preparation Instructions – Small Bowel Follow Through Preparations

Patients should arrive 15 minutes before their appointment time for COVID screening protocol.

PREPARATION
– Nothing to eat or drink after midnight
– No smoking or chewing gum for 8 hours prior to and up to your appointment time
– PATIENTS WHO EAT OR DRINK THE MORNING OF THEIR APPOINTMENT WILL BE RESCHEDULED
– You will be instructed to drink barium during the exam to highlight the stomach and bowels
– Total duration up to 4 hours which includes changing into hospital attire, medical history questionnaire, explanation of procedure, exam with Radiologist, and imaging to follow the barium through the entire small bowel tract (duration is dependent on each individual)

POST EXAM CARE
– Drink plenty of fluids (8 glasses of water) each day for 3-4 days after the exam unless otherwise instructed by your attending physician
– Resume normal diet and activity
